Ana the Buff Brahma
The Cutest Wallflower
From the very beginning Ana was a standout from her flock. Not only because she was the only buff chick among a herd of white chicks, but her sweet disposition and shy personality makes you want to snuggle her! She seems to come out her shy shell a little more each day, but she'll likely always be a quiet presence in the flock.
Wanna Be Momma
When we put all of the younger chicks together in our second run, after a few days of integration, Ana decided that she was going to be the soft momma of the flock. She'll likely be our largest hen by the end of the year, but she is anything but a bully. If anything, we may need to keep an eye on her for broodiness because she wants to keep an eye out for all of the wild chicks! She's the type to stand back and let everyone socialize, but if there's a disagreement she meeps a call to order. It's cute how the others respond to her gentle mothering.
This is why we chose to name our Small Flock Block after her: Ana is a small group kinda gal and definitely the "Mom friend" of the group. She would be the one to provide the treats, bring the bandaids and make sure that everyone is having a good time at the party she would host in her home.
Egg-cited for the Future
The Brahma breed is not only known for their size and commonly gentle demeanor, but for their eggs laying during the cold months. Here in Utah, our winters regularly dip below freezing and the Brahma is a great option for a backyard flock for extremely cold temperatures. Their short pea comb is frostbite resistant and the feathers on their feet protect their toes from the cold. As a slow-to-mature breed, Ana should start laying around Halloween then steadily throughout winter while some of our other girls may slow down egg production. She's a sweet, shy and curious girl, and we're looking forward to many years of her peaceful balance to our wild second flock!
