Sariah - Black Star

Extra Spicy, Please!

Sometimes you don't get what you pay for. Sariah and her sister Poette are perfect examples of this. We ordered Barred Rocks, then got a couple of unknowns! But more about that later.

From the start Sariah was assertive and somewhat bossy, and honestly? We had rooster concerns.

Blame the Hormones

Turns out, Sariah was just quick to mature and took her job as oldest girl seriously! She was bossy, would round everyone up for the night, and wasn't afraid to pick a fight. That all changed when our boy, Indi, came to maturity and nature figured a few things out.  She calmed down, is far friendlier to everyone, and is a sweet girl all around. (Although she does grumble a little if I take too long to deliver the scratch!)

Sariah's Floral Nesting Blend

Our First Layer

One of the most exciting things about getting backyard chickens is when they start to lay eggs. Months of hard work and stressing over the little poofs turned raptor mutants and finally into recognizable chickens, then one morning, an adorable, perfect pullet egg!!! 🥚 Sariah kicked off a laying frenzy and other than a super hot few days has been a consistent layer from the start. This is what inspired our Nesting Blends and she is the namesake for our Floral Blend.

We don't have a ton of personal experience with the Black Sex Link or Black Star chicken breed, but Sariah and her clutch mate Poette have been wonderful ambassadors for the hybrid bird. Sariah is smart, curious, energetic and vocal without being "noisy", and we've determined we wouldn't mind adding a few more to our future flock expansion.

What has your experience with Black Star chickens been like? Would you have them as part of your flock again? Let us know!
